“Exercise Beyond Weight Loss: Unlocking Energy, Confidence, and Independence”
By Amanda Mittleman M.S.
In a world obsessed with the number on the scale, it’s easy to overlook the myriad benefits of exercise that go far beyond weight loss. Whether you’re hitting the gym, going for a run, or joining a fitness class, exercise offers a treasure trove of rewards that enhance every aspect of your life—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Let’s dive into how exercise can transform your life for the better, and why finding the right program with the help of community and expert coaching is key to achieving lasting success.
Beyond the Scale: Energy Boost and Confidence Galore
Exercise is like a magic potion for boosting energy levels and elevating mood. When you exercise (at a moderate level), your body releases feel-good chemicals like dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, leaving you feeling invigorated and ready to conquer the day. Say goodbye to those mid-afternoon slumps and hello to newfound energy that fuels your passions and pursuits with gusto!
Joan, our super hero of the month, started exercising so she would be strong enough to take care of her husband who was diagnosed with ALS in 2022. In the process of getting strong, Joan fell in love with the way exercise made her feel. She fell in love with the energy that comes after a workout, and the confidence that comes with knowing you can move freely today and in the future.
And let’s not forget about confidence—exercise is your secret weapon for feeling unstoppable. As you achieve fitness milestones and overcome challenges, your self-esteem skyrockets. Whether it’s mastering a new workout move or completing a challenging hike, each accomplishment builds your confidence muscle, inside and out.
Independence and Medication Freedom: Exercise to the Rescue
Imagine a life where you rely less on medications and more on your own strength and resilience. Exercise can help make that a reality! Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the need for medications for conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and even depression. By taking charge of your health through exercise, you empower yourself to live a more independent and medication-free life.
Strength for Life: Caring for Those You Love
One of the greatest gifts of exercise is the ability to be strong—physically and emotionally—for the people who matter most to you. Whether it’s lifting your grandkids with ease, helping a friend move, or simply being there as a pillar of support, exercise ensures you’re strong enough for whatever life throws your way. Being able to care for others is a priceless benefit that comes from investing in your own health and well-being.
For Joan, being stronger meant she could take better care of her husband. Nobody plans on becoming sick, or taking care of a sick family member. Nobody plans on needing to push her (or his) broken down car off the road, nobody plans on tripping and having the coordination to catch yourself, or at least fall in a way to keep all 32!
The Role of Community and Expert Coaching
Now, let’s talk about the secret sauce that makes your exercise journey not only effective but also enjoyable: community and expert coaching. Surrounding yourself with supportive individuals who share your goals and cheer you on makes all the difference. Whether it’s a fitness class where everyone high-fives your progress or a running group that motivates you to lace up your sneakers, community keeps you accountable and inspired.
Pair that with world-class coaching—someone who understands your unique needs, challenges, and goals—and you have a recipe for success. A personalized exercise and nutrition program tailored to your lifestyle ensures you find the right balance of workouts and healthy eating habits that you can stick to for the long haul. No more fad diets or boring workouts—just a fun, effective approach to achieving and surpassing your health and fitness goals.
Embrace the Joy of Movement: Aging Independently and Vibrantly
Exercise is your ticket to a life filled with energy, confidence, independence, and strength. Beyond weight loss, it’s about embracing the joy of movement and reaping the rewards of a healthy, active lifestyle. With the support of community, the guidance of expert coaching, and a personalized exercise plan, you can achieve lifelong strength, resilience, and vibrance. So, what are you waiting for? Lace up those sneakers, join a fitness class, or hit the trails—your best life awaits!
QUESTIONS and ANSWERS
1. Describe what your life (and your health) was like before fitness.
I had been going to the gym and yo-yo dieting what seems for what seems like all my life. Every time I started a new program, I was sure that was “the one.”
2. Was there ever a low point or an experience that made your priorities change?
My husband was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2021. Suddenly, fitness wasn’t just a want, but a need. I was in no shape to lift him and help him safely without hurting myself. I was exhausted, depressed and resentful. Also, I started training for an ALS bike riding fundraiser and needed to get in better shape to handle the hills.
3. How did fitness come into your life (or back into your life)?
Exactly one year ago, after my teaching school year ended, I randomly called Mo-Mentum. The gym is right down the street from me, so I see it all the time. I signed up for a few personal training sessions, then started doing the group personal training. I was hooked!
4. What kind of results have you seen since starting a regular fitness program?
I feel stronger and healthier. I am able to manage my husband safely. I have become a true cyclist, having completed 3 ALS fundraising rides, a 50-mile ride, a 60-mile ride, and I’m training for a 100-mile ride in August! I even got a bicycle tattoo for my 60th birthday!
5. Please talk more about the actual changes in your life? (weight loss, confidence, more endurance, less medications, increased energy, better relationships etc.) My body fat percentage has gone down. My skeletal muscle mass has gone up. I have learned so much about healthy eating and having a healthy lifestyle through the challenges. I’m a happier person at home and at work.
6. Let’s focus in on the blood work. What kind of changes have you seen there? What do these changes mean for your lifestyle, longevity, finances, etc?
I’m off of my cholesterol medication.
7. Why do you make fitness a priority in your life?
My whole day is better when I work out. I feel better. I eat better. I sleep better. I’m in a better mood. I have more confidence in myself.
8. These days, what makes you truly happy and feel at peace?
I am truly happy and at peace when I am helping others. I can only do that when I feel good about myself.
9. How do you feel compared to 1 year ago?
I am stronger, healthier, happier and more confident.
10. What is your favorite thing about Mo-Mentum Fitness?
My favorite thing about Mo-Mentum is the personalized training and the family atmosphere. It really feels like a second home.
11. What would you say to the person who know they need to start exercising but is afraid to start?
Sign up for a few personal training sessions. When you think you don’t feel like going, go anyway. I guarantee you’ll feel better after you’ve worked out!
12. Specifics: your age? job title? Children? Spouse?
I just turned 60. I teach 5th grade. My husband, Matt, is an engineer, but on disability. My daughter, Sarah, is a Marriage and Family Therapist and getting married in September. My son is a software engineer.
