May Superhero of the Month

Superhero of the Month – Barbara Roth

Congratulations Barbara Roth! You are definitely a superhero!

If you’ve ever met Barbara Roth you’ll remember her! Barbara is a bright light. To me, Barbara is a Spitfire! When she enters a room, she energizes it. She always puts a smile on my face. She’s tough and she’s loving. Barbara knows what she wants in her life and she leans in to make it happen.

Barbara was losing weight before she retired, but after she retired December 16, 2016 she doubled her weight loss and got even stronger. Barbara took full responsibility for her fitness, health and happiness and one day at a time she went from being able to do only 3 burpees to doing 1000 burpees in one month! Barbara is one of the people that makes Mo-Mentum Fitness the incredible community that we are! We love you Barbara! Thank you for being a superhero!”

Q & A

Meet Barbara, Mo-Mentum Fitness’s Superhero of May! She definitely is a superhero!

Describe what your life (and your health) was like before fitness

” I was 40 pounds overweight and my blood pressure was very high, even on medication. Few of my clothes fit and going up and down stairs was hard. Both my back and knees hurt all the time. I had been fit before, and knew I had to get back on track if I wanted to start feeling good every day.

Was there ever a low point or an experience that made your priorities change?

” No particular point, for me, just a general concern about my health.”

How did fitness come into your life (back into your life)?

“I joined a boot camp and could barely do three burpees in a minute. The gym closed that class, so my husband and I joined Momentum Fitness. We were the first 5:30 AM class at Momentum, because I was still working and had to get to work at a reasonable hour in the morning. It was hard to get up at that time, but I would always talk myself out of working out at night, so that was the only choice.”

What kind of results have you seen since starting a regular fitness program?

“From barely being able to doing three burpees in a minute, to doing 1000 burpees in a month; took about a year. I was consistent at working out, at least 3-4 days a week, and I started to feel good most days. When I started to see improvements in my stamina, and strength, I got excited and began to do 5 or 6 days a week. “

Please talk more about the actual changes in your life. (Weight loss, confidence, more endurance, less medications, increased energy, better relationships, etc.)

“After the first year, I started losing weight: about 10 pounds a year over the last three years and I am 10 pounds from my goal weight. My blood pressure has dropped to being consistently normal for the last year or so and I feel great. My bone density has actually improved 4-7% in the last three years as well. Weight lifting really does make the difference. I feel great every morning and have lots of energy.  My blood work had generally been good except for blood sugar. In the last year that has dropped as well. “

Why do you make fitness a priority in your life?

If I want to have an active happy life, fitness has to be a part of it. I don’t struggle with going to the gym anymore either, working out with the people in my classes is something l look forward to everyday. I miss it when I don’t go. It is great to have met some of my fitness goals and see my health improve. I am proud of the changes I have made in my fitness and in my life. Because of how significantly different I feel without it. I can’t go back now, I have dreams and goals for my fitness life and my career as an actor. Fitness has opened many different doors for me and I am so excited to keep going.

These days, what makes you truly happy and feel at peace?

“Being retired is one of the best gifts I have in my life, and my husband and I enjoy traveling and seeing new places.

How do you feel compared to 1 year ago?

“Every year I am amazed as to how much stronger I have gotten than the year before. I sleep better and it is easy to move and get my chores done during the day. I walk everyday on top of my workouts ant the gym and am grateful I can still easily move and do things I want to do. “

SPECIFICS? JOB? AGE? CHILDREN?  I am 65 years old and finally retired after 25 years in sales. My husband and I have been married 20 years with a son living in Seattle.
