Superhero of the Month – Chris Marley

Congratulations Chris Marley! You are definitely a superhero!

Team Mo and I chose our SUPER HERO OF THE MONTH based on several important factors that we believe reflect the values on which the Mo-Mentum Fitness world-class culture has been built upon.

       Chris started at Mo-Mentum in May 2018.  Chris may a quiet man, but don’t let that fool you.  He is a funny, lively, incredibly determined and driven soul.   Chris often attends two classes a day while his wife is across the country completing her last year in medical school.  When Chris started at Mo-Mentum he was already on a mission to lose weight, that he had recently gained back, but he has surpassed that mission and today it’s obvious to see that Chris has adopted an entirely new lifestyle.

     Chris’s story is one of inspiration and the power of setting a goal, deciding what you want for your life and and completely leaning in until you achieve that goal.  The thing that separates people who dream from people who actually achieve their goals is the wiliness to take consistent action.

    Recently, Chris discovered a love for weight lifting.  He will be competing in his first weight lifting competition on September 29th and 30th this year.

     Chris Marley, your journey so far has been an incredible inspiration!   You are a super hero and we’re so proud that you are Mo-Mentum’s Super hero of the month for September!




Q & A

Meet Chris, Mo-Mentum Fitness’s Superhero of  September! He definitely is a superhero!

Describe what your life (and your health) was like before fitness

“I’ve always been overweight and growing up, a bag of Doritos was considered a legitimate meal. To make matters worse, I hated gym class and never really enjoyed sports. Since most people in my family were large, there really wasn’t anyone to look to for guidance when it came to health or fitness.”

Was there ever a low point or an experience that made your priorities change?

“About ten years ago, through strict dieting and some rather inconsistent running, I lost about 60 pounds over the course of one year. During that time, I didn’t actually cultivate good habits. I didn’t learn how to enjoy unhealthy foods in moderation, so my strict diet was unsustainable. I also never worked out consistently or included resistance training. As the years went on, the weight slowly crept back up. I was in denial for many years and would never set foot on a scale. After finally weighing in one day, I realized I had gained all the weight back and more. I was determined to go on a second weight loss journey but I knew I needed to do something different, or else I would just gain it all back again.”

How did fitness come into your life (back into your life)?

“My second weight loss journey began a few years ago and the first task was to get my diet in order. While meal prepping might not work for all people, it was key for me as it allowed for healthy eating no matter how busy I was. When it came to working out, I initially did some elliptical work and running at the gym, but I knew I really wasn’t doing these workouts for fun and that I needed to keep searching for a workout I truly enjoyed. I tried some group exercise classes at my school and was instantly hooked. The supportive environment was great and the workout variations from week to week kept things interesting. “

What kind of results have you seen since starting a regular fitness program?

“I’ve lost about 50 pounds so far, and by focusing on improving my overall fitness (instead of just cutting calories) I’ve seen my endurance improve and I’m setting new personal bests at the gym.”

Please talk more about the actual changes in your life?

“When I work out consistently, I tend to pick healthier food options which has a domino effect: I have more energy at work, I get better sleep, and I’m happier overall.”

Let’s focus in on the blood work. What kind of changes have you seen there? What do these changes mean for you lifestyle, longevity, finances, etc.?

“I’ve been very fortunate to not run into major health challenges up to this point.”

  Why do you make fitness a priority in your life?

“I guess by now I’m just addicted to the rush of endorphins.”

These days, what makes you truly happy and feel at peace?

“Reaching my goals has improved my confidence, encouraging me to set even bigger goals.”

How do you feel compared to 1 year ago? 

“I’ve been coming to Mo-Mentum since May and I feel great. One year ago, I felt great as well, I was eating healthy and exercising almost every day. However, the year in between was a roller coaster. Last September, I was entering my last semester of grad school and had just a few months to finish my dissertation and find a job. The stress caused me to revert back to my old self. I stopped working out and dined almost exclusively on Nutella. However, I was able to rebound relatively quickly afterwards and for that I credit the group exercise classes which helped me build strength and endurance. Had I focused exclusively on cutting calories to lose weight, I might have been back to square one.”


“I’m an aerospace engineer and my wife, Hue, is starting her last year of medical school.”
